The vibrant community of Umuguma, in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, recently came together to celebrate a cherished tradition – the 2025 New Yam Festival of Chief Sir Paschal Ezikeojiaku (Ogbuonyeisiogu 1 of Ihitenansa). The event, held at his residence, was a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people and the enduring spirit of community.
Chief Ezikeojiaku, in his remarks, expressed his joy and gratitude for the overwhelming turnout, attributing the success of the festival to his love for attending people's events and his commitment to upholding the Igbo culture and tradition. He emphasized that the celebration of Iriji is a way of remembering his forefathers' traditions and culture, albeit in a modernized and Christianized manner.
The High Chief explained that the 'Epum Theory,' propounded by his late father, Ichie Professor T.A. Ezikeojiaku, highlights the significance of yam in Igbo culture. According to the theory, God planted cut yams and cocoa yams to produce man and woman, respectively, which is why yams are revered by the Igbos. Ogbuonyeisiogu noted that in the olden days, yam theft was punishable by death or banishment, underscoring the importance of this staple crop in Igbo society.
Chief Ezikeojiaku appealed to everyone to participate in the annual Iriji festival, citing its benefits, which include provision of long life, prosperity, and family peace. He prayed for God's blessings on the people of Umuguma for welcoming him and promised to continue his humanitarian services to the community.
The event was chaired by Chief Kingsley Nnadi (CEO of Unbreakable Associates), who commended Chief Ezikeojiaku for his dedication to preserving Igbo culture and tradition. He urged the Igbos to jettison their reliance on foreign culture and instead focus on promoting their rich heritage. Chief Nnadi emphasized that culture is the bedrock of science and that its preservation is essential for scientific progress.
The celebration of the 2025 New Yam Festival is a testament to the enduring spirit of the Igbo people and their commitment to preserving their cultural heritage. As the community comes together to honor this tradition, they are reminded of the importance of their roots and the values that have been passed down through generations.
The festival also highlights the significance of community and cultural preservation in today's fast-paced world. As people become increasingly globalized, it's essential to hold on to the traditions and customs that define us. Chief Ezikeojiaku's celebration of Iriji is a shining example of this, and his commitment to promoting Igbo culture is truly commendable.
