The Nigerian Chapter of the International Press Institute (IPI) has announced the removal of Executive Director of International Press Centre, Mr. Lanre Arogundade's name from the Department of State Security's (DSS) watchlist after approximately 40 years.
This development was disclosed by IPI Nigeria President, Mr. Musikilu Mojeed, at the 3rd Nigerian Media Leaders' Summit in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Mojeed revealed that the DSS Director-General, Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, informed IPI Nigeria of the decision during a recent engagement.
The removal of Arogundade's name from the watchlist follows a sustained and intensive campaign by IPI Nigeria. The campaign gained renewed momentum when Arogundade's name was not removed despite previous assurances. For nearly four decades, Arogundade faced persistent harassment and embarrassment, including brief detention by security operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
Arogundade's journey to the watchlist dates back to the military regime when he served as President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) between 1984 and 1985. IPI Nigeria commends the DSS for finally removing Arogundade's name from the watchlist and welcomes the decision.
Media executives at the summit applauded the announcement, while Arogundade expressed gratitude to IPI Nigeria for their tireless efforts. The removal of Arogundade's name from the watchlist marks a significant victory for press freedom and human rights in Nigeria.
This development highlights the importance of sustained campaigns and advocacy in promoting press freedom and protecting human rights. IPI Nigeria's efforts demonstrate the power of collective action in bringing about positive change.
As the media community celebrates this victory, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges facing journalists and media practitioners in Nigeria. Continued advocacy and support are essential to ensuring that press freedom is protected and promoted.
With his name removed from the watchlist, Arogundade can now travel freely without fear of harassment or detention. This decision brings closure to a long-standing issue and allows Arogundade to continue his work as a journalist and media executive without undue interference.
The removal of Arogundade's name from the watchlist is a testament to the impact of collective action and the importance of protecting press freedom. It serves as a reminder that even in the face of adversity, sustained campaigns can lead to positive change.
