COMMUNITY IN MOURNING: THE EKE UBAHAEZE MARKET TRAGEDY

Orsu LGA, Imo State – June 26, 2025

A dark cloud hangs over our beloved community today. The devastating explosion at Eke Ubahaeze Market on June 25, 2025, has left us heartbroken, with lives lost, families shattered, and many of our brothers and sisters injured. As authorities work to uncover the cause of this tragedy, we are left to grapple with grief, but also to find strength in unity.

Where the vibrant sounds of commerce once filled the air, there is now silence, a painful reminder of life’s fragility. Yet, even in this moment of sorrow, the resilience of our people shines through, therefore as a community, we must choose peace, hope, and collective action.

My dear brothers and sisters, though our hearts are heavy, we must not lose sight of the dawn ahead. Our land has endured much, but through unity, we will overcome. To our youth: You are the pillars of our future. Let your strength be seen in wisdom, not violence. Let your voices ring with purpose, not conflict.

This tragedy compels us to reflect deeply on the power of good governance and civic responsibility. We must unite to elect leaders who prioritize our safety and well-being.

When we stand together, when we vote wisely and protect our democracy. We pave the way for lasting peace in our community. Look to our neighbors in Abia State, where security and progress thrive under committed leadership. Their joy is possible here too, if we demand accountability and work as one.

In the face of this pain, our community has shown remarkable courage. Neighbors are supporting the bereaved, tending to the wounded, and proving once more that Igwe bu ike ( unity is strength ).

Let peace begin with each of us, in our words, our choices, and our actions. Together, we must build bridges, not barriers.

Through the Stephen Ugoh Foundation and other collective efforts, we are mobilizing aid for the affected. Vigils and prayers honor those we’ve lost and light the path forward.

Though the road to healing is long, the people of Orsu will rise. We choose hope over despair, solidarity over division, and action over silence. Our people in Orlu, Oru East and other LGAs are with you always.

A safer, stronger Imo State is within our reach, if we stand united.

In solidarity,
