URGENT ALERT: Diphtheria Outbreak Reported in Aboh Mbaise LGA, Imo State - Precautions and Actions Required

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has issued an urgent notice to all secondary school principals, primary school heads, parents, and guardians of primary and secondary pupils and students in Imo State. The notice is in response to a reported outbreak of diphtheria in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area and possibly other parts of the state.
*Immediate Action Required*
As a precautionary measure, all schools in and around Mbutu Communities have been closed down until further notice. This directive was issued on Monday, May 26, 2025, shortly after the diphtheria outbreak was alerted. Parents and guardians are urged to take immediate action to ensure the health and safety of their children.
*Symptoms to Watch Out For*
If your child complains of any sickness, please take them to the hospital immediately. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing diphtheria and preventing complications. The symptoms to watch out for include:
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Swollen glands
- Membrane covering the tonsils
- Difficulty breathing

To prevent the spread of diphtheria, parents and guardians are advised to:
- Ensure that their child receives regular vaccinations, including the diphtheria vaccine.
- Practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing.
- Avoid close contact with anyone who is sick.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Aboh Mbaise Department of Health, directs that all stakeholders, including teachers, pupils, students, parents, guardians, and community leaders, work together with healthcare professionals in their communities and Local Government Areas to prevent the spread of diphtheria.
