By Mary Ugorji
In a vibrant celebration of Children's Day, the Kings Garden Sports Project Nigeria officially kicked off its initiative aimed at transforming the lives of youth and adults through the power of sports. The launch event took place at the Oru West Local Government Area headquarters on May 27, marking a significant step towards grassroots development and character transformation.
Rev. Dr. Ugochuma Perez Ibeakamma, the National Executive Project Director of the Free United Nations Human Rights Education and Advocacy Training Project in Nigeria, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering character development within the community. “We are thrilled to partner with the Oru West Local Government to create a positive impact on our youth and school children,” he stated.
The initiative is rooted in the vision of the project's founder, a local businessman residing abroad, who sought to engage in corporate social responsibility by leveraging sports to reform generations. Teaming up with established organizations such as the United Nations, the Kings Garden Sports Project aims to reach grassroots communities in Oru West.
“We need to provide modern, educational guidance for our children, adapting to the rapid developments in technology and value systems,” Rev. Ibeakamma remarked. “Through sports and other engaging activities like competitions and dances, we aspire to instill moral values and proactive participation among the youth.”
Mr. Chidubem Ojinnaka, the instructor and coach at Kings Garden, highlighted the introduction of table tennis as a focal activity in schools across Oru West and Imo State. “Our goal is to combat drug abuse, cultism, and gangsterism among the youth. We want to change the narrative and create a healthier environment for them,” he explained.
The project commenced with a mock tournament promising prizes ranging from 10,000 to 25,000 Naira to encourage participation. “This event allows us to introduce the youth to sports, and it's just the beginning,” said Ojinnaka. “We will expand from here to make a broader impact across the state.”
With an inspiring message directed at the youth, both Ibeakamma and Ojinnaka urged them to reject negative influences and focus on their passions. “Don't succumb to peer pressure. Define your own path and pursue what you love while maintaining strong moral ethics,” Ibeakamma advised.
One of the event's standout moments featured Amb. Ibeakamma Chimnaeme, who, despite her youth, captivated the audience with her eloquence and passion. “I began public speaking in junior secondary school, and that experience has shaped my journey,” she recounted. She spoke about her journey in dance and music, blending personal growth with a strong message of morality that resonated with her peers.
The Kings Garden Sports Project is poised to ignite a movement within Oru West, inspiring the next generation to channel their energy into sports, build character, and foster community values. As the project unfolds, the Kings Garden Sports Club remains committed to creating meaningful opportunities for the youth, paving the way for a brighter future.
