Dr. Chika Benson Abazu, Imo State's Commissioner for Transport, has revealed a comprehensive blueprint for transforming the state's transportation sector. Speaking to Imoedge newspaper Publisher and other journalists on November 11, 2024, Abazu outlined key initiatives aligned with Governor Hope Uzodimma's "Shared Prosperity" agenda .
*Reversing Past Shortcomings*
Abazu acknowledged the state's previous lack of transport policy and implementation mechanisms. "Before 2020, there was no transport policy, no master plan, and no semblance of order," he stated. However, under Governor Uzodimma's leadership, the administration is committed to implementing global standards and bringing sanity to the sector.
*Revitalizing Railway Transport*
A central proposal is the revival of the Imo State Railway Transport Metro Plan, serving Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe zones. This project aims to establish a efficient railway system for residents and visitors.
*Enhancing Intercity Transportation*
Abazu also announced plans for central bus terminals across the state, improving intercity transportation management, reducing congestion, and providing better services.
*Smart Financing and Sustainable Energy*
The state is securing support for Smart Financing options and advocating for Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) adoption, reducing environmental impact and improving sector sustainability.
