NLC President Joe Ajaero Arrested by DSS: A Web of Intrigue Unfolds

  By Ella Michaels

In a shocking turn of events, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, was arrested on the 9th of sep 2024 by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. Ajaero was about to board a flight to the United Kingdom for an official assignment when he was picked up by the DSS.

The reasons behind the arrest are still shrouded in mystery, but sources reveal that Ajaero has been handed over to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). This dramatic turn of events comes just days after Ajaero honored a police summons, accompanied by human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and other labor leaders.

Ajaero had been invited by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) arm of the Police Force on August 19, with a threat of arrest if he failed to comply. However, he explained his inability to attend on the specified date and offered to come on August 29 instead. The NLC President had been accused of alleged criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

As the plot thickens, it emerges that Ajaero was arrested just as he was about to attend a conference of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in the UK. The NLC President's ordeal has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the motives behind his arrest.
