The Imo state house of Assembly representative for Isiala Mbano, Honorable Sam Ikechukwu Osuji has urged the traders and transporters in Imo State to compliment the efforts of the Imo state government in alleviating the suffering of Imo people accessioned by the recent inflation the affected the commodities and transportation in the state by reducing prices of ware and food stuff and also the transport sector to reduce the transport fares especially now that exchange rate has gone down in favour of Naira.
He made the appeal at a press parley in his office on Monday 8th April 2024. In his speech, he appealed to traders, importers and retailers in Imo State and Nigeria in general to put into consideration the fact that Dollar, pounds and other currency has fallen considerably in favour of Naira in the last months and reduce the prices of their commodities in the market considering the hardship consumers in the state are going through.
In the same vein, honorable OSUJI who is coincidentally the house committee chairman on transport appealed to transporters in Imo state to reduce the hiked fares the collect from commuters as it also affects the hike in commodities in the market.
The vibrant Isiala Mbano law maker argued that with the current reality on performance of the naira against dollar with exchange rate of #1850 to one Dollar was the main reason commodities went up in the market. But as naira has gained ground and the exchange rate has come down to #1.150 to one Dollar, it should also affect the prices of commodities in the market and transport fare. He appealed to traders, transporters and other business players to be considerate especially as the Superlative and performing governor of Imo state Senator Hope Uzodimma has Concluded arrangement to invest $1.5 billion dollars in uplifting the standard of living of Imo people through education and quality infrastructure which includes massive employment for millions of Imo youth through Afrexim Bank.
Honorable Sam Osuji there fore appealed to the leadership of market unions in the state to direct their members to reduce the prices of their goods without further putting consumers into more untold hardship. He also called on the National Union of Road Transport workers ( NURTW) to also follow suit for the interest of the common Imo citizen in appreciation to government efforts to alliviate the suffering of people of the state.
