Nigeria is in mourning the loss of its former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London clinic. His former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, confirmed the news, stating, "INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAIHIR RAJI'UN. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin."
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari served Nigeria as President from 2015 to 2023 and previously as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985. His death has drawn tributes from leaders, international figures, and citizens nationwide. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced his predecessor's passing, ordering flags to be flown at half-staff. Vice President Kashim Shettima will accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria as the nation pays its last respects. Many Nigerians have expressed condolences to the Buhari family, with President Tinubu reaching out to Mrs. Aishat Buhari, the former President's widow.
