Imo State Charts New Course in Industry and Mining: Ibejako Leads Drive for Sustainable Growth

By Mary Ugorji

In a decisive move to reposition Imo State as a hub of sustainable industrial and mining development, the Honourable Commissioner for Industry, Mines, and Solid Minerals, Barrister Ernest Ibejako, has unveiled sweeping reforms aimed at restoring order, ecological balance, and economic vitality to the sector.

Speaking during an interview with newsmen at his office on Friday, Commissioner Ibejako affirmed the administration’s unwavering resolve—under the leadership of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Dr. Hope Uzodimma—to put an end to years of unchecked exploitation and environmental degradation, especially within the state capital.

“We are resolute in our policy to cease all mining operations within the capital district,” Ibejako declared. “His Excellency demands excellence, and that means aligning all developmental activities with globally accepted sustainability standards.”

The Commissioner emphasized that protecting the state's ecosystem is not only an environmental necessity but also foundational to infrastructure development and economic growth. In this regard, the government has initiated dialogues with former miners, encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices and comply with the new regulatory framework—despite facing resistance in some quarters.

As part of the state's broader industrial revitalization agenda, Ibejako announced plans for the establishment of a world-class mining plant and the rejuvenation of industrial layouts across Owerri, Orlu, and Okigwe. Preliminary reviews of existing sites, including the Onitsha Road and Naze industrial layouts, have revealed serious irregularities, such as unauthorized residential encroachments—errors inherited from previous administrations.

“Our mission is clear: to restore these industrial zones to the original 1995 master plan,” he stated. “We are creating a business-friendly environment through improved road networks, reliable power supply, and gas infrastructure to support manufacturing and production.”

With a forward-thinking strategy focused on sustainable land use, investment promotion, and industrial efficiency, the Ministry under Ibejako's leadership is determined to make Imo State a model for responsible mining and industrial development. The ultimate goal, he said, is to position Imo as a regional economic powerhouse—without compromising the wellbeing of future generations.
