Safe Schools Initiative: A Collaborative Approach to Enhancing Security in Imo State

The Nigeria Police Force has taken a significant step towards enhancing school security in Imo State through the best practices and recommendations from the summit. The event, held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri, from May 14 to 15, 2025, brought together security agencies, school authorities, and host communities to discuss strategies for protecting educational institutions.

The summit focused on strengthening security resilience and integrating host communities in the protection of education. The Inspector-General of Police, *IGP Kayode Egbetokun*, emphasized the critical role of community policing in safeguarding schools. The event featured specialized training for members of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) and key presentations on security awareness and early warning systems.

- *CP Abayomi Shogunle, PhD, fsi*, National Coordinator of the SPS, highlighted the importance of building security resilience in schools and involving host communities in safeguarding educational institutions. He stated, "The Safe Schools Initiative (SSI) and the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) are focused on eliminating crime among students in Nigeria. We are committed to creating a safe and secure learning environment for all students, and we urge all stakeholders to join us in this noble cause."
- *CP Aboki Danjuma*, Imo State Police Command, reaffirmed his commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. He emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order and encouraged students at all levels to abstain from social vices, cultism, and other unlawful activities. He emphasized the importance of digital responsibility, teamwork, and strict adherence to school rules. She stated, "Every school can become a safe school. By investing in education, we are not only securing the future of our children but also propelling economic growth and national development. We urge all stakeholders to join us in this noble cause and work together to create a safer and more secure learning environment for all students."
- *Sir Cosmos Iwu*, Secretary to the Imo State Government, representing Governor Hope Uzodinma, advised students to remain committed to their education and avoid unlawful activities. The SPS has an emergency response strategy in place, and students and the public can contact the squad via the official emergency number and WhatsApp contact: 0807 735 7777. The squad is also accessible via the POLICE VGS app, which can be downloaded from Google Play Store.

The Stakeholders' Forum on School Security and the Training of the School Protection Squad was a resounding success. The event united diverse stakeholders under a shared goal: to protect the sanctity of education and ensure that schools across Imo and Nigeria remain safe, secure, and conducive for learning.
