The Imo State Police Command has apprehended a 35-year-old man, Chidi Emma Azonibe, for circulating a threatening message in the Umuoba community of Irete. The message, which warned of a potential attack by Fulani herdsmen, caused significant public concern and prompted an immediate investigation by the Command.
According to the Police, Azonibe confessed to posting the message, which was allegedly composed by his prophetess, Rev. Ijeoma of Assembly Church Irete. Azonibe claimed that Rev. Ijeoma had received a divine revelation from God warning of an impending attack and instructed him and his brother Amanea to disseminate the message within the community.
The threatening message, which read "FULANI HERDMEN WE ARE COMING WAIT FOR US AT ANYTIME ANY MOMENT NOW WAIT FOR US," contributed to heightened anxiety among residents of Irete and Owerri metropolis. The Police are intensifying efforts to apprehend Rev. Ijeoma and other suspects at large.
Azonibe is currently undergoing investigation and is expected to face prosecution. The Imo State Police Command has issued a stern warning against spreading false news and misinformation, stating that anyone found inciting panic or unrest will face the full wrath of the law.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Okoye Henry, emphasized the importance of accuracy and truth in communication, urging the public to verify information before sharing it to prevent causing unnecessary panic and unrest.
