    By Ella Michaels
In a groundbreaking achievement, Lt. Changfe Maigari has become the first female pilot in the Nigerian Navy's 60-year history. Born in Kaduna and hailing from Plateau State, Maigari's remarkable journey began in 2016 when she graduated from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a Sub Lieutenant. She later served aboard the Nigerian Navy Ship Unity, paving the way for her historic accomplishment .

Maigari's determination and perseverance paid off during the 2024 NN Ceremonial Sunset, where she was presented with the prestigious 'Pilot Wing' award at the Naval Training Command Headquarters in Ebube-Eleme, Rivers State. The event marked the end of the navy's annual activities and celebrated outstanding personnel.

Growing up in a military environment, Maigari's aspiration to become a military pilot was inspired by her father, an officer in the Nigerian Air Force. She recounted being among the first group of 20 female regular cadets at the NDA, where she graduated as the Best Cadet in Academics and earned the Gold Medal Navy award. In 2019, she completed her Sub Lieutenant Technical Course as the overall best.

Maigari's achievement is not only a significant milestone for her but also an inspiration to her female colleagues and young women aspiring to military careers. She encouraged them to stay determined, saying, "Perseverance can overcome any challenge in life."

Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, praised Maigari and other awardees for their contributions to the navy. He highlighted the navy's achievements in 2024, including successes in combating oil theft and maritime crimes, the establishment of new naval bases, and fleet upgrades with new patrol boats and helicopters.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State commended the navy for its critical role in addressing oil theft and maritime crime, pledging continued support for naval operations in the state.

Maigari's historic achievement is a testament to the Nigerian Navy's commitment to diversity and inclusion. Her success is a beacon of hope for women in military and paramilitary sectors, inspiring future generations to pursue careers in these fields.
