A recent PDP governorship campaign rally in Ubiaja, Esan South East Local Government Area in Edo State, was marred by controversy when Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, made seemingly insensitive remarks about the marital status of APC Governorship Candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
During her address, Mrs. Obaseki took a jab at Senator Okpebholo, stating that he was unmarried, unlike another candidate, Asue Ighodalo, who has a wife. This comment drew strong reactions from the audience and beyond, with many describing it as "uncalled for" and "insensitive."
The irony of the situation was not lost on attendees, as several pointed out that neither Mrs. Obaseki nor her husband, Governor Godwin Obaseki, have children of their own. Former Governor Adams Oshiomhole addressed the issue directly, highlighting the contrast between Senator Okpebholo's family life and that of the Obasekis.
Oshiomhole noted that Senator Okpebholo not only has children but has also invested in their education, with the eldest being a lawyer and the second a medical doctor. He emphasized that the Obasekis, on the other hand, are childless and have not even adopted any children despite their advanced age.
The incident has sparked a wider discussion about empathy and understanding in public discourse. Many have argued that the First Lady's remarks reflected a lack of self-awareness and sensitivity.
