The Federal Medical Centre Owerri can now produce test tube babies.
A gynecologist and Staff of Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri ( FTHO) Dr. Onyegbule Onyema, announced this break through in an interview with newsmen at the official commissioning of the Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre (ARC), on Tuesday.
The medical guru who is the head of Obstetric and gynecology department of the Federal Teaching Hospital Owerri said that the hospital now has the state of the art facilities and equipment to undertake the production of test tube babies. He clarified that there hospital can now undertake the In Vitro Fertilization ( IVF), a method whereby the man sperm and a women egg is extracted and fertilized outside the woman's womb and incubated for a period of time in Federal medical Centre Owerri Imo State. The fertilized eggs will be injected back into the woman's womb with the necessary medical technique for the formation into embryo stage.
Dr. Onyegbule Onyema certified that this exercise has proven to be ninety percent accurate and realization and more especially for couple that have find it difficult to conceive and bear children. He decried that peace in many families has broken down due to this and happily announce that the medical solution is here at last.
Dr. Onyegbule who is also the program director of IVF unit of FMC Owerri also disclosed that the hospital will in no time, began administering to the first batch of patients.
"No man or woman is completely sterile, there are some marital conditions that can be solved through medical solution. The main problem is that most people who has fallen victims of barrenness are either ignorant of the cure or do not believe it can be solved." Dr. Onyegbule clarified.
Federal medical Centre now has the capacity and capabilities to confront the issues off sterility in both men and women with state of the art and sophisticated facilities to carry IVF.
