The Imo state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Silvia Agu, has announced that about 2300 soldiers will be deployed for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Imo State, scheduled for November 11.

She made this assertion during the two days IPC workshop with Imo journalists held today at Rock view hotel, Imo state.

According to her, the decision to deploy military personnel is aimed at ensuring the safety and security of voters, election officials, and materials during the election

She went further, that  deployment of soldiers for elections is not uncommon in Nigeria. In the past, military personnel have been deployed to provide security during elections and to escort sensitive voting materials to polling units across the country

The southeastern part of Nigeria has been plagued by separatist and gang violence, which has led to the loss of lives and property. The deployment of soldiers is aimed at preventing any disruption of the election by these groups"

The presence of soldiers will help deter any potential acts of violence and ensure that voters can exercise their democratic rights without fear. While the deployment of soldiers for election security is necessary, it is crucial that it is done in a way that does not intimidate voters or undermine the credibility of the election. INEC and the military must work together to ensure that the election is free, fair, and credible. The safety and security of voters should be a top priority, while also upholding the principles of democrac

As the November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State approaches, all eyes will be on the deployment of soldiers and the role they will play in ensuring a peaceful and successful election. The hope is that their presence will contribute to a secure and transparent electoral process, allowing the people of Imo State to choose their next governor with confidence.
